At the same time, the coal mining industry is developing in several directions at once: the emphasis is on improving environmental performance, import substitution is being actively carried out, and, of course, the company is developing its social programs. . About all this, our conversation with the General Director of JSC “SUEK-Krasnoyarsk” Andrey Fedorov.
SUEK lends a shoulder
Andrey Vitalievich, the interim results of this year’s work show that the company is keeping the bar high. What results do you expect this year?

Andrey Fedorov: For the second year, our companies have been working in a very active mode. Twenty million tons of coal mined in seven months is almost 18 percent more than planned and 10 percent more than in the same period last year, which, I note, was a great success for our Krasnoyarsk enterprises. The result for 2022 is 34.2 million tons of coal.
Since the beginning of this year, the demand for coal has remained high, and by the end of the year we expect to reach the same figure. The increase in demand for solid fuels is associated with a significant load on coal-fired generation, which had to “pick up” the volume of hydroelectric power plants: the low water content in the rivers of the Yenisei cascade does not allow power plants to hydroelectric plants fully charged. meet the electrical needs of the region. The miners rapidly increased production and reliably provide energy resources to the region.

Ecology – in the spotlight
For large companies, the ESG agenda is coming to the fore today. What is SUEK doing to ensure environmental sustainability?
Andrey Fedorov: For SUEK, technology and ecology are inseparable concepts. Our companies implement a wide range of measures for land, water and air, all of which, in accordance with the regulatory requirements adopted in Russia, regularly update integrated environmental permits, which are approved by the Ministry of Industry of the Federation. Russia, the Ministry of Ecology of the Russian Federation, the Yenisei departments of Rosprirodnadzor and Rosrybolovstvo.
For example, in the Berezovsky open pit, using the best available technologies, an ultra-modern water disposal and treatment complex was built. After multi-stage purification and ultraviolet disinfection, part of the water is used for the technological needs of the company. The rest of the water is discharged into a natural reservoir; this happens only after bringing it in quality to the level of fishing reservoirs. In July, the complex became a winner of the federal EcoBest award. By the end of 2024, new treatment facilities will also come online as part of SUEK’s water strategy at the Nazarovsky and Borodinsky open pits.
The companies also systematically carry out environmental monitoring, reclamation of disturbed lands: during the past year alone, 21,000 coniferous tree seedlings were planted in areas where mining had previously taken place after landscape restoration.

Import substitution: topic closed
As relevant as the issue of ecology, large companies today face import substitution problems. How do you manage to solve them?
Andrey Fedorov: For the Krasnoyarsk coal mining companies, the issue of import substitution is quite specific. Our main mining equipment is manufactured in machine building plants in the Ukraine, and access to replacement parts is understandably limited. Therefore, we closely cooperate with machine-building plants in Russia regarding the development of technical documentation and the manufacture of spare parts. And although this is a long process, in general, the task of ensuring the operability of our equipment has been solved today. We also cooperate with companies in Russia and China in the supply of electrical equipment and basic elements for excavator control systems.
As for the current maintenance and modernization of equipment, a significant part of the work is carried out by its own mechanical and repair plants, which earlier this year were merged into a Unified Service Company (LLC “ESK SUEK”) with a management body in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
