On February 21, 2024, the State Public Historical Library of Russia hosted a presentation of the seminal publication in English “From the Northeast Passage to the Northern Sea Route: the history of the shortest route along the northern coast of Eurasia.”
The team of authors of the book included Russian, Norwegian, British and Dutch scientists. The result was a richly illustrated, 500-page large-format volume, published in the Netherlands with many maps and photographs, telling the story of Arctic exploration from the 9th century to the present. We are talking about a centuries-old history of outstanding discoveries, daring expeditions, victories and defeats.
The result of the long-term development of the northern seas was the creation of an Arctic sea route called the Northern Sea Route. The book pays close attention not only to the past, but also to the present of the Northern Sea Route in close relation to political, economic and ecological problems.
The presentation was attended by the publication’s editor, professor at the Arctic University of Norway JP Nielsen; member of the editorial board of Rodina, academician AO Chubaryan; Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Russian Historical Society RG Gagkuev; Professor of the Northern Federal University (Arctic) VI Goldin and other specialists.
The book was donated to the Historical Library by Professor JP Nielsen, and now everyone can familiarize themselves with this publication.
