It is the second time that a Finnish director has received the FIPRESCI award: in 2017, critics from all over the world praised his film “Beyond Hope”. This year, a record number of 669 contestants took part in the vote, choosing this Finnish-German co-produced love camera film out of all films released after July 1, 2022.
The other two Critics’ Choice finalists were Martin McDonagh’s Banshee of Inisherin and Todd Field’s Tar, both films premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival where they won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor (Colin Farrell) and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress (Cate Blanchett). ) respectively.
Since its creation in 1999, the FIPRESCI Grand Prix has been awarded to renowned filmmakers such as Maren Eid, Pedro Almodóvar, Paul Thomas Anderson, Alfonso Cuarón, Jean-Luc Godard, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Michael Haneke, Richard Linklater, George Miller, Chloe Zhao and others.
The FIPRESCI Grand Prize will be awarded on September 22 at the opening ceremony of the 71st San Sebastian Festival.
