Sweets, with which people often “eat” a bad mood, can lead to real depression, says Zukhra Pavlova, an endocrinologist, Ph.D.
– Is that how it works. I have repeatedly written in publications and articles that obesity leads to inflammation of adipose tissue. And, in particular, it is accompanied by the production of a large number of pro-inflammatory substances – prostaglandins. Those, in turn, block the work of serotonin, the “joy hormone.” It is he who is responsible for a good mood, without him it is impossible to feel happiness, – writes Dr. Pavlova. – It turns out that all the cakes eaten, deposited on the waist, lead to inflammation of adipose tissue and, ultimately, to blocking serotonin.
From the editors, we note that this looks like a kind of “vicious circle”: heavy feelings / bad mood – an attempt to drown them out with sweet food – accumulation of fat at the waist and inflammation in adipose tissue – serotonin blockage – feelings difficult / low mood and, in the long term, risk of transition to depression.
– Of course, not only sweets lead to obesity, but also fast food, mayonnaise and any fatty foods. But it is precisely with sweets (cakes, ice cream, pastries) that people are accustomed to “jam” a bad mood. Only as a result of “sweet therapy” will the mood eventually drop even more, continues Zukhra Pavlova.
