Automaker Toyota is working with self-driving technology company Pony.ai to begin mass production of self-driving taxis. Hypebeast writes about it.
The decision to establish a joint venture is aimed at promoting the production of fully unmanned taxis and their use on a large scale. The company will be created within a year and the volume of investments will be about 140 million dollars.
The new cars with integrated Pony.ai autonomous driving technologies will be powered by PonyPilot+, Pony.ai’s robotic taxi service platform. Through joint efforts, robotic taxi services will be available to passengers in the future. In test mode, Pony.ai already operates around 200 Toyota and Lexus-based robot taxis that travel on public roads in many cities across China.
Remember that the previous unmanned vehicles were presented by Yandex and Hyundai. The cars will be used as taxis in Innopolis.
