“The UNESCO World Heritage Committee did not agree with the inclusion of the Kamchatka volcanoes on the List of World Heritage in Danger and commissioned experts to carry out a follow-up mission to visit the region. This is a balanced decision and objective, which we welcome with great satisfaction”. Solodov wrote.
The governor noted that without visiting the site and discussing with representatives of specially protected natural areas, the commission’s evaluation could not be objective, but would have political connotations.
According to Vladimir Solodov, in recent years the region has implemented many UNESCO recommendations. In particular, the authorities abandoned several gold mining projects and expanded the buffer zone. In addition, President Vladimir Putin supported the proposal to raise the protection status of the territory to the level of a national park.
