For the first time, UNESCO threatened a city on water with a finger in 2021. However, then it was decided to give the city a second chance, which, it seems, could not fully take advantage of. “The development of Venice, the effects of climate change and mass tourism threaten irreversible changes,” the organization said in a statement. The document also notes dissatisfaction with the appearance of skyscrapers in the city, which can “have a significant negative visual impact.”
In order not to be blacklisted, which would threaten to deprive UNESCO of financial support for the preservation of attractions, local authorities must follow a series of recommendations. The Venice City Council assured that it would study the claims carefully and discuss ways to resolve the issues with the Italian Cabinet.
