Pavel Kotov is preparing for his first Olympic Games. Before travelling to Paris for the Games, the 25-year-old Russian has been to the clay court in Kitzbühel, where his first opponent will be Italian Matteo Berrettini, who just won the title in Gstaad. The players have never played each other before. The winner will face the second-ranked player of the tournament, Alejandro Tabilo from Chile, in the second round.

The new season is in full swing in Norway (the championship is held there according to the spring-autumn system). Nikita Khaikin’s Bodø-Glimt now leads the tournament, six points ahead of its closest rival. The team scored the most goals (36) and conceded the fewest (13). In the previous qualifying round of the Champions League, the Latvian club easily beat Larne from Northern Ireland 3-0 and 4-0. As for the national championship, the Russian Federation occupies first place, but the closest rival is four points behind.

Intrigue: How will Qarabag start in the new Champions League?
Qarabag had a great season last season. The club became champion of Azerbaijan, achieved success in the national cup and reached the round of 16 of the Europa League, where it lost dramatically to German side Bayern. The best club in Azerbaijan starts the new season without Andrey Lunev: the Russian goalkeeper has returned to his homeland. The best club in Gibraltar, in turn, beat Hamrun from Malta with great difficulty in the last round. The teams exchanged victories 1:0 and in the penalty shoot-out luck was on Lincoln’s side.

Intrigue: Who will win the battle between the champions of Romania and Israel?
Steaua is the Romanian champion at the end of last season (three points ahead of Cluj). In July 2024, the club won the country’s Super Cup, after which it tied the championship twice in a row. Now the reigning champion is only in tenth place in the table. In the qualifying round for the Champions League, the Romanian club left no chance for Virtus San Marino with 7-1 and 4-0. Last week, Maccabi won the Israeli Super Cup, beating Maccabi Petah Tikva (2-0). At the end of last season, the Tel Aviv club became the national champion.

⚽️ 21:00: Dynamo Kyiv – Partizan, Champions League, second qualifying round, first match
Intrigue: Who will make the step towards the next round of qualification?
Partizan made their appearance in Moscow this month. The Serbian national team reached the Brotherhood Cup and then played a test match against Lokomotiv. First, Partizan won a convincing victory in the match against Dynamo: they turned the 0:2 into 2:2 and won on penalties. After that, the Belgrade club lost without a chance to CSKA (0:3), after which they drew with the Railwaymen 1:1. On July 19, Partizan started with a victory in the new edition of the Serbian championship: with a goal at the end they defeated Napredak (1:0). Dynamo finished last season in second place in the Ukrainian championship table, and the difference with Shakhtar was two points. The team has not played official matches of the new season yet.

The Puerto Ricans lost all of their friendly matches before the start of the Olympics, but in each game they proved that they would not be scapegoats. The Spaniards previously defeated Argentina, but they are not going into the Games as main contenders. Each team must make the most of the last friendly match before the start of a major tournament, because after that it will no longer be possible to make mistakes.

Intrigue: How will Mourinho’s first game at Fenerbahce end?
Jose Mourinho is back in the Champions League. So far, only in qualifying. The coach took charge of Fenerbahce in the off-season and the next match will be his first competitive game in his new role. In the summer, the Turkish club strengthened its squad with defender Caglar Soyuncu, midfielder Rade Krunic, winger Allan Saint-Maximin (on loan) and striker Cenk Tosun. Lugano is Switzerland’s second club at the end of last season and is also a finalist in the Swiss Cup (it lost the final match on penalties). Unlike its rival, it has already played one competitive match this season: on 20 July it beat Grasshopper (2-1).
