Who will we support in the Magnitogorsk tournament?
In the absence of international competitions, the main tournament of the season in Russia will be the Spartakiad of the Strongest, which will also host figure skating competitions. From February 16 to 18 in Magnitogorsk, the country’s best athletes will compete for medals in each of the four events.
Unfortunately, there is already bad news for fans of the most beautiful sport. The list of participants has been significantly reduced. Kamila Valieva, initially highly anticipated in this start, will not be able to compete due to the conditions of her disqualification. Another famous figure skater who decided to conquer pair skating will also not come: Alena Kostornaya and her partner retired due to the athlete’s injury. She decided not to risk it and had shoulder surgery to recover for the next season. For medical reasons, Taisiya Sobinina and Denis Khodykin also refused to participate.
Another top is in doubt. Pyotr Gumennik fell ill with double pneumonia, which developed due to the coronavirus. However, the skater did not announce his retirement. According to the coach, the athlete intends to act if his last test is negative.
Thus, the Spartakiad has already suffered heavy losses, but this does not mean the end of the intrigue. Other talented skaters are in place and will be ready to show a beautiful fight. We tell you what to prepare for during the next tournament.
