Some of the victims were fighters from the Shiite movement Hezbollah, an enemy of Israel. Lebanese authorities blamed Israel for the attack.
The New York Times confirms that the Israeli intelligence service Mossad organized this unprecedented operation, having previously extracted thousands of devices, the next batch of which was ordered by Hezbollah members. According to one version, the explosive detonated synchronously due to the heating of the batteries, which began after a special code was sent to the pagers.
The preparation of such an industrial-scale attack (pagers produced by the Taiwanese company Gold Apollo were loaded with explosives “on the way” to Lebanon) took at least a year, considering that the batch of devices arrived in Lebanon five months ago. But if in the case of the kidnapping of a Nazi criminal the Israelis were applauded all over the world, in their current management many innocent citizens suffered.
ADOLF EICHMANN KIDNAPPING
After the end of World War II, some high-ranking Nazis managed to escape justice. Among them was Adolf Eichmann, who was called the “Architect of the Holocaust” for his role in the extermination of people. The Nazi managed to escape to Argentina, where he changed his name and lived as a simple worker. It was not until 1960 that Israeli agents found Eichmann. It was dangerous to demand his official extradition to Argentina: Nazis could escape to another country.
Israeli leaders decided to carry out a secret Operation Finale. On May 11, 1960, Mossad agents approached Eichmann as he was returning from work. They threw him to the ground and then took him to a prepared villa. According to the participants, the most difficult thing for them was to contain their aggression towards Eichmann.
Ten days later, the executioner was drugged with a sedative and sent to Israel posing as a pilot who had suffered an accident. The Argentine border guards did not suspect anything and let the Mossad agents through.
The court sentenced the Nazi to death. The Argentine authorities were never able to prove the involvement of Israeli intelligence in this case. According to the official version of the then Israeli government, Eichmann was kidnapped by “volunteers.”

THE STOLEN DIAMOND
In 1966, the Israeli authorities realized that things were heading towards a new confrontation with the Arab states. At that time, information appeared about the appearance of a new Soviet fighter among the Arabs. Israeli intelligence decided to seize a model of the aircraft in order to find out how to deal with it.
Mossad agents tried to recruit Arab pilots to fly the fighter to an Israeli airfield. In Egypt they failed: one pilot handed the spy over to the authorities, the second arrived in another plane. Then the Mossad turned its attention to Iraq, where intelligence agents recruited one of the best pilots, Munir Redfa. He was a Christian and at that time they were being persecuted in Iraq.
The Mossad eliminated Munir’s family members in advance and also prepared the pilot well. In correspondence, Redfa and the agents referred to the plane as a “diamond,” which served as the name for the operation. The hijacking took place on August 15 during a training flight. Redfa, at low altitude, abruptly changed course so that the air defense of Iraq and Jordan would not notice him. 25 minutes after departure, the pilot landed at the Israeli base in Hazor in a brand new Mig-21. The study of the characteristics of the hijacked plane helped Israel during the Six-Day War.
NUCLEAR REACTOR BOMBING
In the 1970s, a new danger arose for Israel. In 1975, Iraq and France signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy, and in 1976 a contract was signed to supply a French light-water nuclear reactor to Iraq. In theory, after some time, Saddam Hussein could have an atomic bomb.
It was not possible to convince Paris to abandon cooperation with Iraq. So the Mossad took action: in 1979, two reactors ready to be sent to Iraq were destroyed in the French port of La Seine-sur-Mer. Instead, Baghdad received a new reactor and began research.
Mossad agents located the facility. The deadlines were pressing: the reactor had to be destroyed before the summer of 1981, when it would be filled with nuclear fuel and put into operation.
It is interesting that Israel agreed to cooperate with Iran; according to some reports, the parties exchanged maps of the area and Tehran offered its airfield in Tabriz as a reserve base. In 1980, a war broke out between Iran and Iraq, so the Iranian authorities were interested in weakening their enemy.
On June 7, 1981, a group of Israeli planes passed undetected through the airspace of Saudi Arabia and Jordan. They dropped 16 bombs on an Iraqi nuclear reactor and returned to base. Iraqi air defenses detected the planes only on the way back, but failed to shoot them down.
Before the reactor was destroyed, several Iraqi nuclear physicists died under mysterious circumstances. Israeli intelligence is also suspicious of this. As a result, the reactor could not be restored and Iraq’s nuclear program was curtailed. The world community condemned Tel Aviv for a serious violation of international law, but no concrete measures were taken.
FALSE RESORT
The Mossad also has peaceful operations to its credit. In 1983-1984, as a result of the Ethiopian Civil War, thousands of Ethiopian Jews (Falasha) fled to the north of the country and to South Sudan. Israeli leaders decided to bring them into their territory, but to do so in secret to avoid direct conflict.
Mossad agents opened the Red Sea resort of Arusa and distributed thousands of brochures to travel agencies.
Under the cover of a travel agency, the scouts took the people to the coast, where they were put on board Israeli Navy ships. In total, 14 to 18 thousand Ethiopian Jews were taken out in this way. The Sudanese authorities had no idea of the true purpose of the new complex.
KILLER ROBOT
The most famous operation of the Israeli intelligence services in recent years was the assassination of Iranian nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. On November 27, 2020, near the town of Damovend, he was shot by a robotic machine gun as he got out of his car. The scientist died in hospital. Suspicion fell on the Mossad.
The machine gun was equipped with a special device that allowed the operator to fire it remotely. It was delivered to Iran disassembled and then installed in a pickup truck. The weapon was mined; it was detonated remotely to hide traces. Another pickup truck equipped with cameras was also found at the crime scene, allowing Mossad agents to verify that it was Fakhrizadeh who was sitting in the car.
