What to watch during the May holidays: atypical movies and television series for the holidays

Date: May 20, 2024 Time: 08:49:28

May is a month of long vacations and meetings with friends. However, if by the second weekend you’re tired of barbecues and picnics, it’s time to relax on the couch and watch a couple of great movies. We made a selection of movies and TV series for different moods, available in Russian online cinemas.

Catch a good sadness

A moving and at the same time funny road movie about the relationship between parents and children.

Zhanna moved from a small town to Moscow in search of success and happiness, she has a good job, earns a lot, but a sudden call from her father, whom she has not seen for more than 15 years, forces her to return to her “ desert”. Upon returning, she no longer finds her father alive and now all she wants is to quickly organize a funeral and get away from the bad memories of her. However, the ghost of the father who appeared to Jeanne has other plans for the day with her daughter.

The Bortich/Maikov duo made me skeptical at first, but as the plot develops, the characters begin to feel the “chemistry” and tension that the situation requires. In addition to the faces we know, the film pleasantly surprises with the performances of the secondary characters (Ilya Antonenko, Pavel Kuzmin).

This is a therapeutic painting about one’s own integrity and how important it is to close the gestalts of the past to find peace of mind. It is recommended to watch alone or with parents.

“Rock Wave”

Fill yourself with inspiration:

A magnificent creation by Richard Curtis (“Love Actually”, “Bridget Jones’s Diary”) with an incredible cast and soundtrack.

1966 Conservative UK. Young Karl, encouraged by his mother, finds himself on a ship where real radio pirates work. Despite government prohibitions, they broadcast pop, rock, reggae and funk, which so “corrupts” British youth. Surrounded by people who are truly creative and passionate about his work, Karl discovers himself and all the beauty of life against the rules. He is also trying to find his father.

Rock Wave is a whole group of wonderful actors who play their roles incredibly well. At the head of this gang, of course, are Bill Nighy and Rhys Evans. The actors literally have fun on camera, teach the young man about life and go crazy. And an amazing playlist only helps them with this.

You can watch it with friends and then go to a party.

“Hanging out in Palm Spring”

A light and warm comedy with the stars of “Brooklyn 99” and “How I Met Your Mother” trapped in Groundhog Day.

In sunny Palm Springs, wedding preparations are in full swing. Sarah is the bride’s sister, with whom she has a difficult relationship, but she will do everything possible not to ruin the wedding. But Niles, who appears suddenly, ruins all her plans. He seems to see the future and this intrigues her terribly. Together they find themselves in a time loop from which it is not so easy to get out.

The film, which captivated both audiences and critics at the time, is a kind of mix of science fiction, romantic comedy and comedy, perfect for relaxing. Semberg and Melioti do a great job maintaining the level of humor and drive and definitely won’t let you get bored. And the backdrop of sunny California will bring you the feeling of summer.

Look at any company.

“Knickerbocker Hospital”

tickle your nerves

Name: “Knickerbocker Hospital” (The Knick) Director: Steven Soderbergh Actors: Clive Owen, Andre Holland, Jeremy Bobb and others Release date: August 9, 2014Gender: drama, story Duration: 20 episodesClassification: 8.3 out of 10Where to see: “Kinopoisk”, “Ivy”, Wink.

“Knickerbocker Hospital”

A pseudo-historical drama about the origins of surgery for fans of true crime podcasts, starring Clive Owen (“Children of Men”).

In New York at the end of the 19th century, talented surgeon John Thackery helps patients while inventing new types of operations and saving people, but sometimes his experiments border on morality and the times in which he lives.

The series will appeal, first of all, to viewers mentally prepared for the blood, the type of organs and the history of the origin of the medicines we know today. It seems easy and interesting, there are no particularly sinking moments.

“Hospital”, among other things, raises a number of social issues that, in general, are very organically woven into the general scheme of the story. And the brilliant cast does not hesitate to get their hands dirty to present the viewer with an authentic image of the daily life of a doctor.

Viewing with children or impressionable friends is not recommended.

“Moonlight Magic”

Believe in magic

Name: “Magic in the Moonlight” (The Knick) Director: Woody Allen Actors: Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Eileen Atkins and others Release date: September 25, 2014Gender: drama, melodrama, comedyDuration: 1 hour 38 minutesClassification: 8.3 out of 10 Where to see: Okko, Kinopoisk, Ivy, Wink.

A light-hearted comedy about finding magic in real life on the Côte d’Azur.

Elderly illusionist Stanley has long been disillusioned with magic and psychics, and after his performances he happily takes on hacking jobs to unmask his colleagues.

One of his friends invites him to stay in France, mentioning that a pretty girl who poses as a powerful medium has appeared among his entourage. And Stanley was serious. Until I saw it live.

Woody Allen gradually went from being a cynic and a Samoyed to becoming a romantic, which angers some viewers and pleases others. However, if we talk about “Magic”, here you can definitely enjoy the harmonious duet of Stone and Firth, who obviously have a friendly “chemistry”. And also immerse yourself in the carefree atmosphere of tourists on the Côte d’Azur.

We recommend you see it as a family or as a couple (and also with skeptical friends).

“Seven Psychopaths”

I love black humor.

Name: “7 psychopaths” Director: Martin McDonagh Actors: Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson and others Release date: October 18, 2012Gender: comedy, crimeDuration: 1 hour 50 minutesClassification: 7.3 out of 10 Where to see: Okko, Kinopoisk.

A hilarious black comedy with a brilliant cast and tons of weapons.

What are the consequences of stealing a beloved dog from a crazy gangster? Of course, even the most unpredictable ones! A failed writer and his cronies, a gangster’s wife and a group of other people who accidentally found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time will fall under the skating rink of anger.

The film has room for gunfights, philosophical dialogues, and wild plot twists. And thanks to the cast, each character is alive, multifaceted, attracting and repelling the viewer at the same time. Let’s consider the funniest and most absurd dialogue between Walken’s character and the bandits.

The film is sure to appeal to fans of dark humor and uncomfortable cinema, as well as those who like to look for cinematic references – the film is full of them.

Viewing in a large group is recommended.
